Tossed Salad Friday

~~ While driving, I heard an interview on NPR with the feminist, writer, and first female president of Smith College, Jill Ker Conway. This was a repeat of a Fresh Air I’d missed, as Ms. Conway passed away earlier this month.

The host, Terry Gross, was referring to her guest’s memoirs when she remarked, “They say all writers are traitors.” Her guest concurred; she elaborated on how writing about others we know is a betrayal of their confidences and privacy.

That observation brought me up quite short. I’m a traitor to the people who get into my crosshairs any time during the week between blog postings. Whether I write about life as a mere literary workout or as no-cost therapy, I’m violating the personal space of those I encounter. I vent my grievances in the hope that I’ll perhaps feel better, but what about them? I expose them to your ridicule, judgment, and/or derision without any say in the matter.

Yeah, yeah, you’d say, but writers write. Yeah, yeah, you’d continue, names are hardly ever mentioned. However, I’m extremely unsettled by the very word: traitor. There is no good meaning of that word that I can find, and it’s a dastardly thing to consider myself.

tRump is a traitor, not me. Brutus was a traitor, not me. Benedict Arnold, Cassius, Judas, Guy Fawkes, Quisling (yeah, he was a person), and Tokyo Rose: traitor, traitor, traitor, traitor, traitor, and traitor. They may have deceived empires, countries, and causes, while I’m just a dime-a-dozen hack with a blog, but these reprehensible people are not the company I wish to keep.

I’m going to work through this navel-gazing by going to the library and checking out a few memoirs. By next Friday, I’ll either be bursting with renewed enthusiasm — and admiration — for the art of ensnaring others to inhabit my writing, or I’ll free myself from consideration in the category of featured blogger in a comedy, tragedy, or absurdity.

Dasvidaniya. Have a great weekend!
