Tossed Salad Friday

~~ A friend and I were talking about her approaching birthday. We both wholeheartedly agreed that we were not fans of birthdays (or aging, despite it being exceedingly preferable to the alternative). older women
The next day I read an article about the pleasure you can take from saying, “I’m too old for this” as you mature. It helped a bit. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/09/fashion/im-too-old-for-this.html?_r=0

~~ Another friend has the right (healthier) attitude about aging and birthdays. She celebrated her 90th birthday and keeps on keeping on, socializing, teaching, and knitting. Here’s the clever and charming knitting-themed cake her daughter made her for the party: hela's cake

~~ Keeping the birthday thread going, I have another 90th birthday party to attend soon. That’s just amazing!

~~ Sadly, another 90-year-old I admire has received a grave diagnosis. I’m pulling for you, Mr. President.jimmy-carter

~~ A woman sneezed as I passed her from the back. I said, “Bless you.” She turned around so rapidly that I thought I startled or even scared her. I braced but she smilingly said, “No; bless you.”

~~ Oops — I forgot to tell you the August issue of Boating Times was online! http://boatingtimesli.com/NY/. It’s full of great ideas, free of gluten, pro-sun protection, and anti-humidity — you don’t need to be a boater to enjoy our stories, tips, and recipes.

~~ My friend Effie wrote a wonderful novel. If you are looking for interesting historical fiction, a compelling love story, and characters you’d like to spend lots of time getting to know, please buy her book on Amazon:

~~ I recently lost several friends in one day after experiencing their act of heartless cruelty (or maybe it was cruel heartlessness, but either way, it was meaner than mean even if done by first graders). I know now they weren’t actually my friends, but the blow that hit me on a lovely afternoon was sudden and shocking, leaving me woozy and lightheaded.

~~ About those crappy faux-friends? I had written an unpublished story entitled, “A Close-Knit Circle” that featured them. It needed polishing anyway, but now I’m re-writing it under a new title: “Mean Girls Knit.”

First graders can be pretty mean, so wow these ladies must have been the tops. What's frustrating to me is how much I miss people even when I know they're no good for me.

It was incredibly cruel and the kind of thing you'd berate your child about if you found s/he had done it.

I understand your statement. There will be a gap in my life that I'll now miss. But what can I do? One of the group demanded that I apologize for "making it about [me]," one said she "felt bad" that I saw what they did, and the others have let weeks pass with no comment.

I'm fully aware that there are far worse things in life than a group that implodes.

Hope you're well.
