Happiness Runs

As I went to make photocopies, the other attorney trailed me out of the room. At the machine, he said, “I’m taking a survey. Are you happy?”

That question caught me off-guard, so I flipped the question(s) back at him. “Are you just surveying me? Do you want to know if every lawyer is happy? Are you looking for tips?”

“Yeah, I just want to know if every other lawyer is happy. I’m miserable,” he said.

Look, I didn’t know this guy from that proverbial hole in the wall. And I’m not the type that would ever say within earshot of a paying client that I hated the gig. So I gave him a semi-noncommittal answer that I believe answered his survey.

“I watched a show where one of the panelists was identified as a former attorney,” I answered. “I turned to my husband and said, 'Now that’s a great profession!'”

He chuckled, nodded, and walked away. For no reason readily apparent (to me), these Donovan lyrics then began to run through my head:
Happiness runs in a circular motion
Thought is like a little boat upon the sea.
Everybody is a part of everything anyway,
You can have everything if you let yourself be.
