It’s Getting Hot in Here

One very hot July day, a long, long time ago, I showed up at a closing attorney’s office and was told the A/C was broken. As I recall, I shrugged, because there was nothing I could do except represent my clients.

The other attorney was not as resigned as I was.  When she arrived and heard the news, she said, “Oh, no, no, no! You have got to get us some cooling!” The closing attorney explained that he had called twice that day, but as it was almost 100 degrees outside, the HVAC company was very busy.

“I’m sweating big-time!” she pouted. “Who’s paying my dry cleaning bill?” she demanded. Her client quietly asked her to drop it and move on, but she ignored him. Turning to me (egads!) she said, “Men have it easy, don’t they? They can just drop their tops and cool off!”

I replied that I’d never seen anyone of either gender shed their shirts at a closing, but I’d agree to anything she said on the subject if we could just move things along. That mollified her briefly, but about 15 minutes later, she announced, “This is the stinkiest closing ever.”

I resembled that remark.
