Tossed Salad Friday

~~ Here’s a shocker:  I’m mad about sports! I love to watch it, and I also enjoy talking about the players, the plays, the stats, and the coaches. Sports talk is irresistible to me, but few things make me crazier than when all I hear on sports radio is business blah, blah, blah! “Y’all Gonna Make Me Lose My Mind” is my latest post on New York Sports World, on this very topic:

~~The hurricane and nor’easter gave me extra time to read, and I want to recommend three books.  Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead could have been written by Jerry Seinfeld, if Seinfeld was a black teenager who split his time between three seasons of white schools in Manhattan and summers in the black neighborhoods of Sag Harbor. Nothing much goes on (there may be more on bicycles and waffle cones than anyone needs to know), but nevertheless, a growing boy shares his insight on what eventually shapes the man.  I discovered Chris Cleave’s writing a short time ago, and so I greedily snapped up both Little Bee and Incendiary from the library. Both topics are deep and steeped in violence, but the characters and the story-weaving are absolutely superb.

~~This made me laugh out loud.  Give it a watch, and hang on the toaster lady’s very last words!

~~ I know you expect something political, and I’m usually happy to supply some words. However, this made me so happy that I’ll let it speak for me:

~~Congratulations to R.A. Dickey on winning the National League Cy Young Award.  He was one of the very few bright spots in another Mets’ lost season, and more importantly, he is one of humanity’s bright spots, too.

~~Almost everyone has read Pete Well’s latest restaurant review, but if you haven’t had a chance, click here: I know some criticize his “agenda,” or think the snark outweighs the substance, but I love it! As a sometimes restaurant reviewer, I know how to skirt an issue and distract rather than decry. But Mr. Wells is a critic, and as such, his platform should be no-holds-barred.

Have a great weekend! Stay safe, stay warm, and hope that the forecast for next week doesn’t come to pass.
