Point That Finger Elsewhere

It baffles and bewilders me as to how quickly I can become a culprit.  I was off for two days this week to observe Rosh Hashanah, so before I finished up last Friday, I called or emailed every active client to touch base and advise when I’d be returning. Everyone’s response was a variation on No problem! Have a great holiday!

A seller with a lingering listing finally sold her house over the weekend, and the real estate agent left me voice mail on Sunday and sent an e-mail on Monday with the details of the deal. Not content with the auto-response I’m out of the office Monday and Tuesday in observance of Rosh Hashanah, and will return Wednesday, the agent faxed me the information Monday afternoon and then e-mailed me again.

On Tuesday, she left me another voicemail, then e-mailed my client to complain that I was “holding things up.”

Yesterday morning, I called the buyer’s attorney and was told he was not in; the receptionist said she had “no clue” about the deal.  By mid-afternoon, the agent called me to demand why I was “clogging everything up.”  When I responded that I had no confirmation from the buyer’s counsel, nor a fax number or e-mail address to send the contracts anyway, she went for the jugular.

“Are you actually a real estate attorney? I’m guessing not, or we’d have had the contracts underway three days ago.”
