Make Me Confused, Let Me Be Used

It’s an anniversary of sorts for me. I have officially been an attorney for 30 years!

I toyed with leaving out the exclamation mark at the end of the previous sentence. I also thought about inserting a frownie-face. Regular readers and occasional confidantes know that I have mixed feelings about practicing law; I am grateful for the living it afforded me for decades, but maddened that my license no longer is sufficient to earn a living. (In fact, I shared a warning to career-pushing parents a while back in “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Lawyers” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lita-smithmines/mamas-dont-let-your-babie_b_173729.html).

I’m not just embittered because of the emptiness of my wallet. I’m also fed up with three decades of pointless grandstanding, backstabbing, showmanship and one-upmanship employed by many attorneys and other related real estate pros. I’m all for protecting rights, but I’m never for needless histrionics and nasty acts of sabotage seeking an amorphous advantage that vanishes-- poof!-- the moment the closing occurs.

And yet, I am privileged to have met so many wonderful people along my career path, and appreciative of how my degree allowed me to become independent. So you see my dilemma about whether to say, Yay! I’ve been an attorney for 30 years! or Crap. I’ve been an attorney for 30 years. or Yawn… I’ve been an attorney for 30 years.

I see many situations through the curtains of a musical. In fact, I often find life lessons and depictions in the  words of Stephen Sondheim (especially those of my favorite show, Company).  I was seconds away from posting the lyrics to “Sorry/Grateful” to sum up my feelings today. Suddenly, I realized that the profession I’ve practiced for 30 years is best summed up in “Being Alive.”

When you've spent 30 years helping others in a time of need, you can't be anything but proud.

Re: Congrats! Thanks!
I'm proud of helping people, but that doesn't mean I don't need to wash my hands more in this business than some others.

Congratulations on 30 years of a practice that has made US, your clients, exclaim "Yay! You’ve been an attorney for 30 years!" Thank you for being the kind of professional that made that possible every single time during these 30 years!

Thank you!
It's a two-way street. You make my job easier and more pleasant.
