Keep it Down! Voices Carry

When speaking with the sellers about New York State’s real estate disclosure laws, one of the owners leaned towards me and said, slightly conspiratorially, “Do we have to say anything about the neighbor?”

I advised that the sellers need not offer information if no direct question was posed.  I’m wondering whether the neighbor is a creep, a borrower but not a returner, or someone who puts up way too many decorations at the holidays. But I don’t ask, because, well, I don’t really want to know.

That doesn’t mean I won’t learn the answer anyway, after I deliver the good news.

“Good, good,” said the homeowner. “Our neighbor is a huuuuuuuuuge loudmouth. I swear I hear every word he yelps inside his house. Yelp! Yelp! Yelp! All day and all night. He hates his mother-in-law and his daughter’s boyfriend. And he hooooooooooooowls something fierce about Rudy Guiliani.”
