Party On (Without Me)

The attorney was bragging about how much all his clients "love, love, love” him. In fact, he said, one couple revered him so much they invited him to their son’s Bar Mitzvah.

“How lovely,” I murmured, yearning for the real estate closing to end very soon.

“No, it wasn’t,” was his retort. “I’d have to give the kid back one-third of my fee if I went to the damn party.”

“Oh…” said I, now sending prayers to the lords of bank checks to speed things up.

“Yeah, I RSVP’d ‘no,’ and I never heard from them again,” he volunteered.

“Oh…” I was desperate to get out of there now, and no longer willing to engage.

“Still,” he boasted, “I bet they are still big fans of mine. That’s just the way all my clients feel.”

I hope that the family was able to enjoy their big day anyway, without their adored attorney in attendance.
