Deliver the Letter, the Sooner the Better

I was griping to a business acquaintance about how annoying it is for someone to send a solo practitioner a letter or document via Express Mail, where a signature is required and the lag for redelivery can be days. If I am not in the office at the exact time the postal carrier shows up, everything grinds to a halt.

“Tell me about it,” he commiserated. “I was expecting a check from a customer. She sent it on Thursday but since I wasn’t around I got a slip instead. I couldn’t go to the Post Office on Saturday because it was Shabbat, and Monday was a federal holiday. On Tuesday, I drove to the Post Office, but they told me the letter was ‘out for redelivery.’ But since I was at the Post Office rather than in my office, I got another slip when I returned.”

So when did he get the letter? “Thursday, one week after my customer spent about $20 to send it overnight. With those rates the Postal Service should be rolling in the dough.”
