Is Frugal in My Future?

Last week I had occasion to drive down a long stretch of road from eastern Long Island back to my office. I noticed many shopping centers were partially or completely empty, and quite a few free-standing buildings were boarded up.

That’s not news, I know. Heck, I even wrote about it the last time I drove the same route from the same cemetery http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lita-smithmines/empty-is-as-empty-does_b_274263.html

But what was different this time were the new businesses that I spied amidst the empty parking lots and faded “VACANT” signs. These establishments had cars in the lot, plus banners and flags proclaiming OPEN and WELCOME.

They weren’t drug stores (though we sure have a lot of them), and they weren’t supermarkets (quite a few of them are being shuttered). The two types of establishments that were flourishing amidst our suburban decay were thrift stores and psychics.

I guess this means that though plenty of us can barely afford to get by now, we also want to know if improvement is in our futures.
