Love is a Load of Crap

A couple came into my office, wanting to buy a home together. As they weren’t married, I advised them to treat the purchase as a business partnership, and enter into a financial agreement about the purchase, ownership costs, and sale of the house.

They each looked at me as if I was crazy, and refused to discuss it further (I put it in writing that I had so advised them, because I’m not crazy).

A few years later, I got a call from one of the (now-split) couple, asking what could be done to make her co-owner pay one-half the mortgage while the house lingered on the market, waiting to be sold. The gist of my advice was that, lacking any written agreement, there was nothing to be done except hire a litigator, start a lawsuit, and obtain a court order.

“I wish I had known all this,” she said. When I gently reminded her that we had discussed the downside of neither being married nor a partner in a house-business operation, she let out an expletive-filled tirade, concluding with the title of today’s blog.

Love and all that...
Those of us who listened to your wise words were relieved and grateful that something was in place when the time came. You said "do it NOW, while you still care about each other; if that feeling continues you have nothing to lose but if it doesn't you'll both be covered". That was around 1986. By 1990...well, you see why we were glad.

Thanks-- it's always gratifying to know that.
