A Day Unlike Others

Today is my daughter’s birthday. We’ve long had a mutual admiration society; I have been proud of her for all her life, and she’s been promoting me since she was little.

When she was about three years old, her babysitter drew me aside for a private chat. She whispered, “Perhaps you don’t realize that kids pick up on things they overhear, then have no filter when it comes to repeating things.” Flustered, embarrassed, yet altogether clueless, I asked her exactly what she heard.

“You and your husband may have been fighting or something,” she stated. “Because Hayley’s been saying all day today, ‘My mommy’s a liar! My mommy’s a liar!’ and I thought you should know.”

Slowly, the mists of mortification dissipated, and it dawned on me what my daughter was saying.

I called her over and inquired, “Do you remember when we were talking about what Mommy does all day while you stay with Joanne?” Hayley nodded vigorously and said, “Yes! You’re a lye-yer and you help families get houses!”

Happy Birthday, Hayley. Today is one of the most special days of the year for me, and that’s no lie.
