Bright Lights, Big Blowhard

Years ago, an attorney wanted me to set a closing late on a December afternoon. I declined, suggesting alternate days and times.

He then got a bit huffy, insisting that the day and time he chose worked best because his client had that afternoon off and then both the attorney and the client were heading out on a ski vacation together (they were college buddies, as I recall).

I held my ground, and then offered an explanation. “Hanukkah starts that evening, and my kids look forward to lighting the candles right at sundown.”

“That’s ridiculous,” said the attorney. “My first wife was Jewish, so I know you’ve got eight days of candles. I’m sure your kids would understand-- heck, tell them Mom’s earning more money for presents because she works so hard.”

Funny how he didn’t find it in the least bit amusing to listen to me laugh uproariously.
