Come On A My Old House

The subject matter of the e-mail from a long-ago client was, “Ever heard of ANYTHING like THIS?”

Inside was a message this client had received from the sellers of his home: Hello! I hope you remember us! We sold you the house in 1999, and we need a favor when we return to NY later this month. We’d like to invite just a few of our friends from the block to join us for a coffee or a beer at ‘our’ house the day after Thanksgiving (your choice of beverage for us to supply of course). We used to host this and are nostalgic. Maybe you’ll meet some of the ‘old’ people and make new friends, too. Hope to hear a good response!

My correspondent wanted to write back, “Go to a diner,” but his wife thought it couldn’t do any harm. Did I want to be the tiebreaker?

My response probably pissed off the sellers and his spouse. I wrote, “There’s no legal issue here, but if I personally received this note, I’d decline. I’m not a fan of cleaning my house, so I sure wouldn’t want to serve coffee to (semi) strangers! Why not just say, ‘We can’t help you out, but let us know where you do get together. Maybe we’ll stop by for a minute or two to say hello.’”

PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE TODAY
If you don’t, “they” think no one’s watching .
