Cutting It Too Close

The buyers wanted to “enjoy one last vacation” before taking on a barely-affordable mortgage, and were on their way home now, said their apologetic attorney.

Seeing as how we’d all been waiting over one hour at the closing table before he even offered any inkling as to what was going on, I asked if they buyers were delayed on the ground or in the air.

“Actually, neither,” he said. “Their flight isn’t due into LaGuardia until 15 minutes from now, and should be here in about another hour.”

I sputtered, “So what are we all doing here waiting for them, when they knew they weren’t going to arrive until at least two hours after the scheduled time?”

“Well… they terminated the lease on their apartment, and would have had nowhere to go if they arrived back any earlier.”

The bank attorney blew her stack upon hearing this. “That’s why G-d invented hotels!” she screeched.
