Tossed Salad Friday

~~ An attorney started a conversation by asking me, “Didn’t we have a deal together when you were young?” I replied, “Sorry. I don’t recall much since my arteries hardened.”

~~ When a client asks me to “hold open” time on three or four days to accommodate the other side’s ability to choose a closing date, that’s the equivalent of asking me to discount my time by 66 or 75%. I can’t earn anything in the other slots, so it’s a real hardship when this request is made.  If I don’t leave large holes in my schedule, I’ll become the one everyone points to as impeding closing once the buyer is set. Hmmm… discount my time by up to 75% or watch my client turn against me amidst accusations of obstruction…what to do?

~~Those who announce unemployment stats shouldn’t use the word “only” as a modifier (as in “only 400,000 new applications, down from…”). If there’s just one person who doesn’t know how she’s going to pay for food and shelter, it’s one too many unemployed.

~~ Someone tweeted, “Businesses don’t fail. People fail.” Guess what, smug philosopher with a job:  sometimes businesses fail.  You can work hard, have a great product or wonderful service, market properly, receive accolades, and still be unable to make your business thrive in this post-prosperity marketplace. Yes, perhaps you could have initially chosen not to go forward, but short of that, the enterprising business owner didn’t fail.  The business itself failed, so the moniker of failure shouldn’t be hung around the entrepreneur’s neck.

Have a great weekend!
