Aloha, Sale!

In August, 2010, a prospective client called on a Wednesday, informing me that he must sign contracts by Thursday, as the seller and the seller’s attorney were going on vacation Friday.

“Can you make the time for me?” he demanded.

“Sure, but have you checked out the house and the neighborhood, met with a mortgage rep, and had a home inspection already?”

“No,” was the answer to my three-part question. “But it’s a good price and I love the neighborhood.”

I called the seller’s attorney for the contracts. Her assistant said she hadn’t received any of the seller’s papers, and didn’t think she could draft a contract and meet with the client prior to the boss’ vacation anyway.

When I relayed this to the buyer, he said, “Forget it then. If they can’t do this fast, it’s a dead deal.”

I wondered:  wouldn’t this delay be a great opportunity to check out the house and environs?

With a deep sign, the buyer said, “No, not really.”

The house in question is on a corner I pass frequently, and it is still for sale. Driving by, I sometimes speculate on where the seller and counsel went on their 2010 vacations. I hope they had the most fantastic getaways ever, blissfully unaware of the ephemeral buyer that slipped through their grasp.
