Packing It In

After reading my blog yesterday, I heard from an attorney  who said that I’d struck a nerve. He had intended to retire when he turned 70, but now, “I won’t make it until 65 with my reduced earnings. Two shopping center owners I represented have gone bankrupt and all my corporate clients seem to be doing their own collection work.

“I won’t make enough this year to cover the costs of keeping even a part-time secretary and pay the rent, so I might as well retire. But I’m only 63 and don’t know what else to do to earn a living.”

He didn’t ask for advice, just a sympathetic ear, and I was happy to give him that. Before we said our good-byes, he asked how long I could last, and had I ever thought of “packing it in?” I remarked that in today’s economic climate, my luggage is always nearby.

Happy birthday, Michael!
