Candlelight Signing

Yesterday the power flickered and failed a few times, and it made me recall the most “romantic” contract signing I ever held in my office.

A violent storm had been ranging since early morning, and I knew before the workday began that I would have no power in my office.  As the skies were pitch-black, I was prepared with candles and a flashlight, as the windows by my conference table and desk would be of no help.

I had a late-morning appointment with a client who was selling his home. Thinking the combo of blinding rain and lack of power might be reason for him to want to reschedule, I called the seller to explain the circumstances.

“Do you have any light?” he asked.

“I have candles.”

“Sounds OK…I’ll see you in an hour.”

I arranged a bunch of lighted candles about the conference table, and when this very attractive man in his mid-30s arrived, I started explaining his contractual obligations.

He interrupted me. “I’m sorry, but the way you look in the candlelight makes me want to ask a very inappropriate question. Are you married?”

When I said that I was, he remarked, “Too bad,” and we never spoke of it again.  More than 20 years later, a weekday storm can still evoke that unsettling encounter.
