One Toke Over the Line, Sweet Mamma

A very long time ago, I had a client who owned a two-family home he inherited from a grandparent. He moved his family into one part and invited his mother into the second part of the premises, rent-free.

The man then called me for a consultation on ways to “evict” his mother from the home. Was she a nagger, or did she interfere in private family matters? Not at all.  In fact, I learned she was quite a mellow woman.

Mom remained laid back, I was advised, because she was smoking marijuana “fairly consistently.” The walls were thin, and the family was regularly getting their buzz on through mom’s second-hand emissions.  Not a great environment for kids and dogs, fumed my client, and what if she got them all arrested?  He wanted her gone!

Had he tried family counseling? Mom wouldn’t go.  How about enlisting siblings to talk to her? Mom wouldn’t listen.

Since she was technically his guest and not a tenant, I didn’t think I could help him.  I did refer him to a drug counselor friend who might have some ideas, and I never heard anything more.

I wish I knew how the story ended.
