No Maybe, I’m Amazed

I tried to come up with the perfect adjective to cover a professional situation. Flabbergasted, bowled over, gobsmacked, and dumbfounded all came to mind, but none seemed adequate to describe my emotion. I’m rarely at a loss for words, but my vocabulary definitely failed me in one deal.

Here’s the basis of my being baffled:  Clients of mine accepted an offer from buyers, and I promptly forwarded Contracts of Sale.  For three months thereafter, the buyers (through their counsel) hemmed, hawed, delayed, procrastinated, considered, paused, reconsidered, shelved, and apparently re-reconsidered signing.  Sometimes a week or more would go by with only vague responses to my repeated status inquiries, such as “I’m checking with my clients…” or “I’m working on it...”  My clients were quite patient, for various reasons, but I had serious doubts the deal would ever fly.

The buyers eventually did sign, and the documents arrived in my office on a Monday afternoon. By Tuesday at 10 am, buyers’ counsel had left voicemail, plus sent an e-mail, wondering whether my clients had come in to sign yet!

That’s when I found my cranial thesaurus had taken a powder. I couldn’t produce the proper word to fill in after “I’m_____________  at your new-found efficiency,” and I certainly lacked the chutzpah to write “I’m working on it…”
