We Are Family

Once upon a time, in a land about not too far away, lived a lawyer on a mission. She would be sure that every purchase deal that came her way would enrich her family five different ways.

Of course you’d call her on the enthusiastic recommendation of your real estate agent, who was her son. Once hired, she’d urge you to call a mortgage broker, who happened to be her daughter. She’d utilize the services of a title company owned by her parents, and the title closer that showed up to collect the insurance fees and charges would be her husband (who pocketed the very generous honorarium the attorney advised the buyers was “customary’).

With five-fold family fees, wouldn’t you be suspicious of any advice this attorney gives you? Where would her loyalty lie if I walked in with a deal that I should be warned to run away from?  Logic tells me that her dedication would be to her interests instead of my own.  But that’s me, I guess.  Plus the Code of Professional Responsibility that governs NYS lawyers and prohibits all conflicts of interests and most enrichment from non-legal services.

Holy Committee of Inquiry, Batman!
Goodness gracious, I was having a heart attack by the end of the third sentence! I was thankful when I realised your angle--I can be a bit slow to catch on at times.
