It’s Not Monkey Business

Back in the day when advice from a more experienced colleague was dispensed face-to-face, usually over a cup of tea at a diner, I complained about a deal that defied all logic and common sense.  My mentor for the day shook his head and laughingly told me, “Ours is a squirrel-y business.  You can’t make rhyme or reason out of it most of the time.”

That remark from 25 years ago came back to me yesterday as I read, and then re-read, an email from the attorney for the sellers in a transaction.  His clients are selling a half-finished house; my clients had to obtain financing from a lender that would advance monies on an incomplete house, which is difficult and time consuming to pull off.

The squirrel-y email admonished that the transaction was “taking too long,” and that my clients “better hurry up.”  However, as soon as the lender is ready to go, he cautioned, the sellers “need time to find a place to live.”

Is a business likened to a nut gatherer better than one compared to a banana eater?
