Too Scared to Leave the Nest

I recently had eerily similar conversations with two lawyers. Each of them has been associated with a (different) law firm for more than four years.  One was “dying” to leave her firm and go out on her own, while the other was being urged to hang out a shingle by his wife and parents. Both were scared to death to leave the security of a steady paycheck.

It’s a daunting time to walk away from guaranteed income and to start drumming up business on your own.  The attorney with a matrimonial litigation background might have an easier time than the one who has only represented mortgage lenders, but they both will find that it’s hard to hustle up your own clients.

I’ve been on my own since 1987, and though I wouldn’t go back to the firm I left for anything less than a high six-figure salary (not that they’re asking), there are still days, weeks, and even months where I regret flying the coop.

I shoulda been a teacher!
No matter how much fun I had as a lawyer and a CPA. Can't pay Slomins with stories.

Can't get a mortgage modification because I'm current on my payments. Love this country.

It's hard to get a modification when you're behind as well. Banks used to make money by lending money. Now you have to beg them for loans and they can barely be bothered.
