Minding My Own Business

While waiting for an appointment the other day, I overheard one woman saying to the other how “the banks are so heartless! My brother-in-law Joey got foreclosed on after missing just one payment, and the court wouldn’t listen to a thing Joey said, even though he was ready to pay!”

It took everything I had to not turn around and say “Really? Just one payment?  Joey missed one payment, and the house was immediately sold in foreclosure, when the average foreclosure sale takes over two years to draw to a conclusion?”  I also refrained from blurting out:  “Wow! Joey had proof he’d been current to just the month before, but the judge in the mandatory foreclosure conference--who is looking for any way to make a bank back off-- still ordered the sale even though Joey offered to pony up the money?”

Readers know I’m no fan of institutional lenders.  But there were so many holes in the woman’s story that I almost felt compelled to defend the unknown bank.
