The Incredible Lightness of Briefcase

Technological advancement has made me uneasy quite a few times recently.  To be more precise, it is not technology that has me on edge, but the missing mass of papers made possible by working in the virtual world.

Title reports, easily 25-40 pages, are now delivered via e-mail.  Correspondence between attorneys and with my clients is mostly done on the web as well.  Not that long ago, a file might weigh more than two pounds and contain in excess of 100 pages by the time I readied it for closing.

My last two seller files weighed less than 10 ounces each, per my postal scale.  That’s very green, and not at all unwelcome, but as I placed each file in my briefcase, I was fretful that I’d forgotten something.  The uncomfortable feeling of forgetting something didn't leave until I was driving away from the closing.

I’ll physically get used to having a lighter briefcase a lot quicker than I’ll shed my apprehension that I’ve skipped a step or overlooked a document.
