The Recession’s Latest Casualty

What I am about to carp about may not trouble you in the least, but it is causing me much angst…

There is a very large law firm, based in New York City, that has a Nassau County office about 45 minutes (sans traffic) away from mine, and also had a Suffolk County satellite office for closings that is 10 minutes away even if I was unlucky enough to be following the most sluggish of dump trucks the entire way.

That local office is now closed, a victim of too few closings and too many layoffs at the firm.  I understand their rationale, but here’s what happens to me: if I have to close on a deal with one of the lenders the firm represents, I need to allocate an extra two hours to frame that closing.  That means I can make fewer appointments in a day, or not close something else the same day if the next closing is in the opposite direction.

Being a single practitioner is hard enough; this recession-reaction decision of a major firm that has no inkling that I exist has just become another burden for me to bear.

At least this is taking my mind off the traveling road show that is also known as LeBron-omania.  I wonder, will he show pictures from his latest mini-vacations to all the NBA hot spots tonight? Otherwise, what’s he doing for the first 59 minutes of his show?
