Dayenu

At the fairly Jewish wedding I attended Saturday night, the band played “Dayenu,” a Passover song that is sung by all the participants in the Seder (which is the re-telling of the story of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt).  There are 15 stanzas about slavery, miracles, and embracing faith, each starting with “If G-d had only_____ [done one thing, such as free Jews from Egyptian slavemasters], it would have been enough.”  In my family, the song is sung enthusiastically, accompanied by laughter.

Hearing it at the wedding just days before Passover, my mind immediately took me from 2010 at The Woodbury Country Club to my parents’ holiday table in the 1970s.  I wrote about some family Passover memories last year, titled “If I Only Had Memories It Would Be Enough.”

I’ve reached the point in my life where the rear view mirror is cluttered with faces that I’ll never have the privilege to see again, and my inner ears hear voices that are now silent.  In my family, as in most, holidays are what bind us together, and holidays are when we clearly see who is no longer sitting at the table.

I’ll end this entry just as I ended on Passover two years ago:

There are too many empty seats at the Passover table I picture in my mind.  But the people who truly fill the seats now are wonderful, and I am most grateful for their company.  I hope that you have a Zissen Pesach… surrounded by those you love, and those who love you back.

For those who have sent me inquiries, what I meant by a "fairly Jewish" wedding is that, despite many of the trappings and symbolism of a Jewish ceremony and the "ethnic" dancing and traditions, the groom and his family were not Jewish.
