When Does Reality Sink In?

In response to my Huffington Post What Recession? Full Spend Ahead! about the salonista who complained of hard times while regaling everyone within earshot about her shopping and spending adventures, a friend send me an e-mail:

Loved your last Huffington with the woman in the hair salon.  I have a client whose husband, 61 years of age, had to close his xxx business because there's no more business out there.  My client tells me they're on a budget and are worried that if he doesn't find a business in the next year to buy or get backers they won't be able to afford health insurance, taxes, etc.  Yet she just got $1,400 worth of Botox, eats dinner out all the time, gets theater & Knicks tix, pays me (by check I might add, so I run with it to the bank that very day), drives a new Mercedes (if they knew business was on the way out why would they lease that car - how 'bout a Honda Civic?), and says they have no retirement.  I don't get it!!!!

Some people never, ever get it
I knew a guy who said "I'm not going to live forever" who figured he'd keep charging and making minimum payments until he dropped dead. When he got laid off I asked him if he regretted that attitude now. He said that he was still charging just as much because if he didn't die soon he'd just go bankrupt.

I'll wager he reaches his credit limit long before he meets his maker.

I never understand the "shop like there's no tomorrow" mindset. I only buy what I need when I run out and if I have the money in my wallet. I sleep better that way.

I agree with you...except about the sleeping part. I often lay awake trying to figure out how to buy what I need.
