Just Call Me Rahm

A former client called me yesterday, hoping I could help.  His mortgage with GMAC was eight months in arrears and was scheduled for a foreclosure sale Monday.  He had obtained the money to pay what he owed to reinstate the loan, but GMAC’s attorneys twice rejected the monies he’d sent them, deeming the amounts “insufficient”.

Panicky, he asked my advice, and I promised to make a phone call for him.  With “attorney” as part of my voice-mail message plus a few well-chosen words about how shameful it would be for the media and Congress to learn that GMAC took TARP money while being uncooperative with those trying to repay funds, I made the same request for action as my client had repeatedly done.

Twenty minutes later my phone rang. The sale date was postponed until February 24th and the new pay-off numbers were in the process of being prepared.  My client thinks I’m a hero, and I hate that it takes strong-arming to get lenders to do the right thing.
