Belittling Borrowers

I overheard a revealing snippet of a conversation while waiting to use the copy machine during a closing. What I heard made me both furious and exasperated; I summoned all my professional strength to avert my eyes and pretend that I was preoccupied with making double-sided copies of checks.

Two women, seemingly taking a break, were chatting in the main office of a local bank (we’d been buzzed into the back for closing). “It was excruciating how the guy wouldn’t accept that we turned him down,” said one. “I know,” said the other. “How many ways can you say ‘rejected’ before they get it though their thick brains that they shouldn’t even be allowed to borrow a library book?”
