Cut Off Lawyer, Cheesed Off Clients

The attorney for the other side was quite a gruff guy. At closing, when I tried to say, “You may want to re-check the numbers,” he cut me off at “re.”

“I got this. I don’t need your advice in front of my clients,” he barked.

“Duly noted,” I said, and wrote a note to my clients on the back of my closing paper, He’s off by $100 in your favor.

When he went alone to the copy machine, I followed, and tried to tell him of the mistake. I didn’t cut right to the chase, however. I started, “I didn’t want to say anything in front of your clients again,” and that’s as far as I got. He glared at me and said, “So don’t say anything.”

In the lobby after the closing, my clients verified my calculations, and wondered if they should write out two checks to the buyers for $50. I wondered why, and one of them said, “He cut you off, so make him apologize for the second $50.” I laughed and said, “They just left. How about you just catch them by their car, hand them the $100, and tell them their lawyer’s a rude SOB?”

That’s what they did, and here’s the email I received the next day: We gave them the check and told them how rude their lawyer is. They said “$100 isn’t just rude, it’s a reason to trash him all over the internet.”
