Shut Your Big Mouth

Tuesday’s tale reminded me about an attorney who just didn’t know when to shut up.

We were waiting a very, very long time for bank checks to be processed, so everyone  at the closing table was making small talk. One amusing story lead to another, until the sellers’ attorney added an anecdote about a client that was driving him crazy. She was obnoxious (that’s relatable) and “really, really fat” (um, dude, so is my client—shut up!).  He made it plain that he really detested this client. “I can’t stand when she calls, but it’s even worse when she has to come in. I always want to yell at her, “Control yourself once in a while and you won’t be so huge!’”

He looks at me and says, “Some people really get to you in this business. You know?” I pointedly looked at my very-distraught-looking client, who was looking down at her nails and turning red, and then turned back. “No, I don’t know.”

He had the grace to apologize, but my client didn’t say a word. Just waved at him dismissively, and barely said another word.
