The Sounds of Silence

If the SOBs of the world all got together and elected a king, it would be the attorney on the other side of a deal.  Aggression oozed out of every encounter; he went out of his way to be obstreperous, making the most routine of requests seem as if he’s lowering himself to do me a favor.

Then, out of the blue, he needs a document signed by my client, and he’s all, “Will you kindly… blah, blah, blah… by tomorrow… blah, blah, blah…”

Readers, you know there’d probably be no blog in this scenario if I just jumped to it and helped him out. And you kind of know that I’m not above looking for something to make up for the needless torture I’d suffered from his royal highness, King SOB. However, practically speaking, my client wants to close and (rightfully) figures he pays me good money to absorb whatever malice comes my way.

So here’s what I did: nothing. Nothing as in not responding, and therefore not giving any indication that I was cooperating in any manner whatsoever. But while I was doing zip vis-à-vis His Royal Nastiness, I was also meeting with my client and making arrangements to have the requisite document overnighted to where it was needed.

Was it really enough for me that the Majesty of Meanness merely sweated for 24 hours, but got what he sought? Was I sorry that I had to respect my client’s ultimate goal, and abide by a code of civility that my adversary did not embrace? Yes and no.
