A Brief Story

The buyer called me after the closing to ask about the protocol for returning items left behind by the seller.  I offered to call the seller, who was also an attorney acting on his own behalf. His office was nearby:  maybe he could stop by when it was convenient for her and pick up whatever he’d left?

“Well, here’s the thing,” she stammered. “He left a whole lot of his underwear in the dryer. I don’t want to have to hand it over to him.  Can I just take it all out with a stick and put it in the garbage?”

According to the deal, she got everything in the house at closing unless other arrangements were made. As there was no post-closing laundry agreement, she decided that she was going to toss them in the trash.

Believe me, I was relieved to not to have to call a colleague and say, “Do you want to swing by your old house and pick up your underpants?”
