Hell, No, You Can’t Go!

The buyer’s attorney had to bolt to another closing. “Do me a favor?” he asked. “If there’s a problem with your client getting the money from the bank, call my secretary and she’ll reach out to me.”

I believe the noise I made was somewhere between a harrumph and a squeal, but I quickly composed myself. “No, I won’t help you out. You’re not leaving until the lender approves the paperwork and the attorney hands my clients a proper check.”

Looking a bit like a caged animal, the purchaser’s counsel turned to the lender’s attorney for assistance. “I don’t care if your client said it’s OK to leave,” he said. “You’re staying until we’re done.”

At this point the buyer turned to the wanna-be escapee. “I want you here, not on the end of the phone” she said, and pointed to the bank attorney and me. “I agree with them.”

The moment the bank’s money came, the glowering and grumbling attorney took flight without saying goodbye.  His client turned to me as I was packing my briefcase and wondered, “Do you know if I am supposed to mail him his check?”

I just shrugged.
