She Gets No Kick from Caffeine

The service provider was calling to ask if she could buy me “a cup of coffee before the holidays.” I politely assured her that was unnecessary (I don’t drink coffee, and I didn’t want to feel bad about wasting her time and money pushing a service that I wasn’t going to use).

She sounded wistful when I declined, and more so when I asked, “How’s it going for you in general?” She answered, “This time of year is especially tough. I can’t afford to lose customers, but I can’t afford to wine & dine them like others do.  And it’s really, really hard to entice new people with coffee!”

Because I sometimes don’t know when to stop talking, I suggested, “What if you wait until January or February, when it’s bitter cold, and offer to buy people a cup of cocoa?”

“That’s brilliant!” she exclaimed (no, it’s just a marketing strategy). “So can we set up a date in January?”
