Tossed Salad Friday

~~ I had to make a difficult business decision this week.  When you know that you’ll almost definitely lose money, and likely shed a whole lot of hair, is the cash flow worth it? I decided it was not, yet now I’m faced with scorn by an empty wallet.  Consider yourself lucky, wallet, because if I had taken the deal, I might have had to sell you!

~~What’s the etiquette involved when you choose one spelling of the holiday (Hanukkah, Hanukah, Hannuka, Chanukkah, Chanukah, Chanuka) in an e-mail, yet the person who replies spells it differently? I always respond with the same spelling the writer used, as after all, it’s just a transliteration.  Yet sometimes a person will respond with a different spelling just over my message, and it feels like a rebuke — you spelled it wrong, so here it is correctly! Now, I’ve taken to replying to such reproachful e-mails with a third spelling, just to be a smartass.

~~I’m sitting in a restaurant, studying the menu (I’ll be writing a magazine review). The women at a nearby table are loudly saying one inane thing after another (as I wrote about in the Huffington Post earlier this week http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lita-smithmines/hear-no-hardship_b_2225389.htm).  All were putting down their spouses, as apparently that’s what you do at a book club holiday get-together.  One woman disdainfully said, to peals of laughter, “He’s more in touch with his feminine side than I am!”  She listed things he did, like buy her an anniversary card weeks in advance, and call to double-check on a prescription the pharmacy previously got wrong. Quelle horreur! He sounded like he was being considerate. Last I checked, that’s a genderless trait.

~~Some guy thought “Are you making plans for the world to end in 2 weeks?” was a good ice-breaker. It wasn’t.  Then I laughed out loud (how rude) when a woman said she was “only making the minimum payments on every credit card, in case the world ends.” If we cease to exist, what good is having money in your checking account?

~~Don’t get me wrong, I understand that the end of the world as we know it is a possibility every day.  It’s just that if we are obliterated in a couple of weeks, much of my sweating, fretting, and regretting will have been in vain. Though it’s likely that I won’t know it.

Have a great weekend, and a wonderful Hanukkah!
