Tossed Salad Friday

~~It’s been a rough time around here.  Long Island, like much of the tri-state area, has been battered and pummeled to a pulp, staggered by Sandy’s uppercut and KO’ed by the nor’easters low blow. Many homes and businesses are underpowered, and everyone is overwhelmed.  Lives have been lost, businesses are shuttered, and beaches have washed away.  Boats are beached and cars are abandoned for lack of gas. Family and friends in non-flooded areas are being told to expect power by next week, and those in flooded areas should remain optimistic that they’ll be restored before Thanksgiving. Optimistic? Before Thanksgiving?

~~  The storms that assaulted us have also provided perspective. Even though our boat was wrecked by the nor’easter, our property suffered Sandy damage, and the magazine was hammered by the hurricane physically and fiscally, I can’t help feeling slightly guilty that we are safe and warm. I have hot tea and soup, plus I can take a shower, the new luxuries of life on Long Island!

~~I’ve been through quite a few presidential elections already, but I don’t remember one that was as tense and stressful as this one. It wasn’t just the constant drumbeat of “tight” headlines and pundit pronouncements that made me uptight. It was how much was at stake.  I did not want to go back 50 years, and I was very fearful that other voters would take me there.  In the end, the Supreme Court won’t end up with more Scalias or Alitos over the next four years, my son can stay on our health insurance when he graduates, and women won’t be consigned to binders marked “Will Accept 77% Pay.”

~~This campaign helped me to discover that I had racist acquaintances that I had to cut from my life. Snip! Done.

~~ Speaking of cutting, the Mets severed ties with Jason Bay. He walked away with a very tidy payout, and I no longer have to uncomfortably (and unproductively) watch a player struggle at the plate while the announcers tell me for the umpteenth time what a “nice guy” he is.

'

Have a great weekend! Stay safe, stay warm, and thank a utility worker.
