Poppa, Can You Hear Me?

In 2007, I shared an email from a client recounting her encounter with a candidate for a local election. In this era of the undecided (a/k/a low-information) voter perhaps swinging tomorrow’s election, I wonder if anyone is polling the anti-father figure voter?

I said I wasn’t supporting anyone yet.  “What would you like to hear me say?” the candidate asked.  I said I wanted to hear who would be lowering taxes on our houses that have lost thousands of dollars in value…  I wanted to hear how the town was doing without like my family was.  He said that I had “unrealistic expectations” but that he hoped I could support him anyway as he “sympathized with my position.” He thanked me for sharing my thoughts so that he could “take them into future consideration.”

He talked just like my father did when he wasn’t listening to my mother, so I voted for his opponent!
