Anger & Loathing at Closings

I was discussing a new deal with the attorney for the sellers when he blurted out, “I hate real estate agents. Don’t you?”

I said, “Not as a group; I really like most of the agents I’ve met over the years. I guess that there have been five or six that have gotten my goat over the years.”

He laughed in a snicker-y, snort-y kind of way. “I’m not talking personality. I’m just saying that they disgust me by how much they make overall. My clients are paying me $2,000 for three-four months of work, while they’ll be forking over $27,000 to the broker for selling the house within a week of listing it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.”

Though I wanted to steer the topic back to the deal, I couldn’t resist asking if he’d feel differently if the house had lingered on the market for many months.“Hell, no! They still get a way bigger payday than us.”

Some facts are depressing without being persuasive. The discrepancy in the closing payments is definitely disheartening, but it hasn’t increased my dislike of an entire group of people (it may have upped the envy quotient quite a bit, however).
