The Check is in My Mail

I was having the kind of meltdown day a single practitioner without support is destined to have every once in a while.

The copier jammed, the fax machine was spewing papers, the phone was ringing, and I had too many files open on my desk.  Something was going to get misplaced or someone’s problem was going to be overlooked, prompting me to wail, “How can anybody be expected to work like this?”

My pity-party soon passed as I soldiered on, and when I could see my desktop, I tackled the day’s mail.  That’s when the universe patted me on the shoulder and showed me that the things that other law firms do might be far worse than placing a fax in the wrong file.

An attorney handling an extensive post-closing escrow had intended to send me a photocopy of his payment to a contractor hired to clear up the municipal violations. He must have merely sent them my “CC” letter, while I received the check instead!

Sure, it cost me a couple of quarters to fix his screw-up. But it’s worth the change to see that someone else is less-than-efficient for a change!
