I had a deal with counsel on the buyers’ side named “Joe.”  We set up a closing, and when the day arrived, I was at the table first.

In come the buyers, the real estate agents, and the title closer (my client had moved and documents were pre-signed). Hellos were exchanged and everybody makes small talk.

In comes the buyers’ attorney, who shakes hands with his clients and the title closer. I say, “Hi, I’m Lita” and he says, “How ya doing?”

From time to time throughout the closing, I say something to “Joe” and he answers.  At the end of the closing, everybody wishes the buyers good luck and we all say our goodbyes.

The title closer and I took a bit of time to pack up our briefcases, and so we were the last to leave. She mentions something about “Lou” and I look puzzled. “You know, Lou, the buyers’ attorney.”

Now I’m befuddled. “That wasn’t Joe?”

“Oh, no. That’s his brother. You didn’t know?”

No, I didn’t know. He should have said he wasn’t Joe when at first I said hello.
