Do You Speak Greek?

[I know it seems like I deal with a bunch of jackasses, but in fact, I deal with very few.  I just break up the blogs about them and space them out, so you’ve already “met” this character in at least one other posting… and may meet him again.]

The attorney sitting on the opposite side of the table thought himself the equal of any Greek mythical deity, both in stature and renown. He’d regaled me throughout the transaction with his lofty and highly superior pronouncements.

As Naricissus’ fingers were poised over a handwritten closing statement, which usually notes who is in attendance, he turned to the person representing the mortgage lender. “So, in order to make sure that I give you the proper honor when memorializing this transaction, are you an attorney?”

Being a lawyer means working hard and probably spending big bucks to get an advanced degree. Also, to some extent or another, those of us who enter this profession choose to be the protector of others’ rights (and wallets).  Yet I fail to see where this allows us to cover ourselves in glory, or even distinction. And it certainly doesn’t give us passage to Mount Olympus!
