“F That Business Plan!”

After a recent seminar, one of the attendees approached the podium to gripe about how many of our colleagues were charging so little for a real estate transaction.

 

“I’ve been doing this over 40 years, and I know what my time is worth. I can’t charge the peanuts these guys do for a real estate deal,” he grumbled.

 

I agreed with him, but noted that we have to compete with lawyers who consider real estate as a loss-leader, luring life-long clients with cheap fees. “Just like some doorbuster deal,” I said, “They get you into the firm, and then hope you’ll slip and fall, divorce, or get arrested, so they can charge you a lot more.”

 

My colleague became irate. “Never happens! If that’s what they think, they can ‘F’ that business plan!  Clients know who’s a $10 lawyer. When something major affects their lives or their wallets, you can bet that they’ll hire a real attorney like me.”
